The Monument Cycle Route is the third themed tour through Bünde and the surrounding area. Previously, the town of Bünde has published the Farmers' Baths Cycle Route and the Tobacco Cycle Route. Once again, the main theme is the history of the Else town. This time, the focus is on urban development, the impact of economic changes on the architecture in the town center and rural housing culture in the countryside. Over the centuries, craftsmen and merchants settled in the shadow of the Laurenus church alongside agricultural businesses. The linen and yarn trades had a positive impact on Bünde, but became noticeably less important over time. This is another reason why 1842 marked the birth of local cigar and smoking tobacco production. This is still clearly visible in many places today. Magnificent villas in the city center convey a tangible impression of the lifestyle of the cigar manufacturers of the time. In the "Stadtgarten" event center, the focus is still on socializing, just as it was back then. The Tobacco Cycle Route takes a closer look at the "heyday" of this industry.
Not all of the buildings along the route are registered monuments, but they are nevertheless interesting witnesses to the past. Finally, a small note: please remember that some of the monuments are privately owned and therefore may not be entered without permission.
The monument cycle route is a circular route of approx. 26 km in length. It starts at the cycle information point in front of the cycle station at the train station. The display cases there provide general and current information about cycling in Bünde, dates and events. The monument cycle route takes us through Bünde city center and the districts of Spradow, Dünne, Muckum, Holsen and Ahle. The map on the cover provides an overview, the detailed maps in the booklet show the exact route. At the stops, you can read special or everyday facts about the villas, courtyards and many other buildings in the text.
Further information on the route and the waypoints can be found at www.buende.de or on the Herford district cycling leisure website: www.fahr-im-kreis.de. There you will also find map material, a brochure and an audio guide as a free download.
