"Nachtwache" in the Cathedral Treasure Minden
The Minden author Christoph Andreas Marx presents his new novel

When night means not only darkness but becomes a place of longing, a mirror of the soul, and the space between dream and reality, the world of "Night Watch" begins. The Minden author Christoph Andreas Marx will present his new novel on Friday, October 9, at 7:30 p.m. during a reading at the Domschatz Minden, Kleiner Domhof 24. The event is organized by the Dombau-Verein Minden (DVM).

The novel centers around three women and three men who have a special relationship with the night and darkness in very different ways. Over several days and nights, Marx accompanies his characters, initially allowing their stories to run parallel, and finally uniting their life paths during an extraordinary cosmic event.

There is Stella, who has lost her great love and seeks refuge in a nocturnal jazz club as a restless "night hawk." Felix, a doctor with frequent night shifts, wants to reclaim the night as a personal and intense time. The artist Samantha, originally from Australia, has an almost mystical relationship with darkness and attempts to capture the night on canvas. Phil knows he will soon go blind and intentionally approaches the experience of absolute darkness. Linda embarks on a quest for answers following the mysterious death of an acquaintance. And finally, there is Mel, the great unknown of the story, whose significance is revealed only at the end.

“Night Watch” is not a classically chronologically told novel. Parallel storylines, flashbacks, dream sequences, dialogues, and inner monologues intertwine with one another. In doing so, Marx intentionally leaves some things in suspense. What is reality, and what is dream? What happens in reality – and what exists only in the perception of his characters?

Above all, night stands as a central motif. It can be threatening and frightening, but at the same time, it can offer tranquility, be a place of longing, and a source of intense perception. In darkness, the senses change; memories and emotions gain strength – the night becomes, as described in the novel, a "dramatization of the world."

The idea for the novel originated on a special night: on June 28, 2022, around 1 a.m., Christoph Andreas Marx observed an intriguing constellation in the sky. According to his own account, this experience gave him the decisive impetus to implement a long-held thought and write a novel in which the phenomenon of night becomes the central motif and place of longing.

At the event in the Domschatz, Christoph Andreas Marx will not only read from "Night Watch." The attendees will also gain insights into the creation of the novel, its unusual structure, and the thought processes behind its characters.

Tickets are available at the Domschatz Minden and online at www.dvm-event.de.
