Marty (Timothée Chalamet) may only be a simple shoe salesman, but that doesn't stop him from dreaming of making it big. He fantasizes all day long about becoming world champion in table tennis. Or rather, he is already convinced that he is one of the best table tennis players in the world. So for him, it's only a matter of time before reality catches up. He sees his big chance in a tournament, for which Marty flies from New York City to London. But there he is confronted with the harsh reality of the sport, which requires a little more than self-confidence. In the final, he is defeated by Japan's Koto Endo (Koto Kawaguchi). But Marty refuses to admit defeat and begins to scrape together the money for the next tournament. This time he has to win, otherwise Marty might have to spend all eternity in his uncle's school store...
