Stadt-Stift-Denkmal

Monument
Historic site
The Stadt-Stift monument commemorates the important ladies' convent that strongly influenced the development of Herford in the Middle Ages.
It was created by sculptor Wolfgang Knorr and has been located on the side of the market hall since 1998. The monument depicts the relationship between the convent and the town since the condominium (since 1256).

Explanation of the monument:
14 basalt columns represent the 14 noble ladies of the abbey who stood at the head of the abbey. The abbess holds the mayor of the town on her lap. She is holding an open book showing the layout of the abbey. The mayor holds the town hall, St. Jacob's Church and St. John's Church in his hands. At the foot of the sculpture, a snake and other creatures are coiled as a symbol of evil, which, according to legend, had to be overcome when the abbey was founded by Weltger. The insignia of the pope and the emperor are placed opposite the abbess and the mayor. The abbey and the town were only directly subordinate to them.
