What makes it special is the combination of various functions under one roof: Hydropower was used to drive a milling mechanism for bread flour and millstones for Schroth production, as well as a horizontal frame saw and a direct-current generator. Much of the historic machinery is still intact and is occasionally put back into operation during special events. This allows visitors to directly experience how water power was once used for milling, sawing, and generating electricity.
The Salzkotten Association for the Preservation of Historic Buildings and Structures (Förderverein für historische Bauten und Bauwerke Salzkotten e.V.) acquired the mill in 2008 and has been committed to its preservation and public use ever since. Guided tours are available by prior arrangement. During events such as German Mill Day or Open Monument Day, visitors can tour the historic site and see some of the machinery in operation.
The mill also features an observation tower on the roof truss. From there, the view extends across the surrounding area all the way to the nearby Vernaburg Castle.
