The exhibition traces the journey from the brine spring to the finished salt, while also highlighting the people behind salt production. Visitors learn how salt workers used to labor, what tasks were involved, and how salt was used in everyday life. The exhibition also explores Salzkotten’s development from a salt-working settlement to the town it is today.
In the “Salt Experience Workshop,” children and teens can get hands-on and explore the properties of this natural substance. A salt scavenger hunt also offers a playful way to engage with the exhibition. Guided tours are available for groups and school classes.
The museum is housed in the former school building on Klingelstraße. The half-timbered building was constructed in 1819 as a one-room girls’ school and was later saved from demolition by the local heritage association and converted into a local history museum. Today, in addition to the Salt Museum, the building also houses a space for local history exhibitions and events.
