• Fortress/Castle

Between the gently flowing Almetal River and the historic mills of Brenken lie the ruins of the former Niederburg. Known as “Niederburg auf der Brede,” this moated castle was once the ancestral seat of the von Brenken family. The complex was destroyed as early as the 17th century—parts of the former manor house have survived to this day.

The ruins are located below what is now Erpernburg Castle and can be reached via a short footpath. Here, amidst the Almetal landscape, visitors can experience history firsthand. The ruins, which are freely accessible, are also a charming destination for hikers and walkers.
