The Ravensberg spinning mill was built between 1855 and 1857 as a mighty building in the factory palace style. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was one of the largest flax spinning mills in Europe. At times, up to 20,000 spindles ran in the factory.
Today, the entire area around the Ravensberger Spinnerei is a popular cultural and event center with two museums, an arthouse cinema, an adult education center and restaurants in the Alte Hechelei building.
