Under Pastor Hövet, the old church was demolished in 1696 because it was too small and too dilapidated. It also only had an altar and a confessional. The dilapidation is documented, among other things, by the fact that the sexton fell from the tower shortly before the demolition and died. The church was therefore demolished and rebuilt from scratch within two years. A number of stones were used in the new building.
