NSG Uhlenbachtal

In the Uhlenbachtal Nature Reserve, there is a pond that, like many bodies of water in the region, was formerly used for fish farming. The Herford district purchased the pond along with the surrounding land. As a result, the poplar trees that had shaded the pond and whose leaves had contributed to the formation of sludge were cut down. The pond banks were leveled, and the sludge was dredged out. Thus, in 2009, a fish-farming pond that was far from natural was transformed into a near-natural habitat for species conservation. Together with the adjacent meadows, hedgerows, and the deciduous forest growing on the slopes, an optimal habitat for amphibians has been created. The success of the water body restoration was not long in coming—just one year after the project, dozens of pond and Alpine newts, as well as pond frogs, had already settled here.
