The Menkebach stream, which is a good 20 kilometers long, has its source on the grounds of the Menkhausen estate in Oerlinghausen. This is why it was initially called the "Menkhauser Bach". However, as it picks up the Schopkebach after a few meters, it is often referred to as the "Schopke". The Menkhauser Bach flows through the Menkhauser Bachtal and Schopketal nature reserve and, as it continues, initially forms the border between Bielefeld-Sennestadt and the district of Lippe. With the passage of the Dalbker Teich, a dam built in 1835 to supply water to the Dalbker paper mill founded by Ludwig Tenge, the stream's name changes to Menkebach. As Menkebach, it leaves the Bielefeld area at Beckhof and flows through the Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock district of Sende. Here it is connected to the parallel running Landerbach by two diverters. After flowing through the urban area of Verl, the Menkebach flows into the Dalke in Gütersloh, which in turn drains into the Ems.
