The history of today's St. Stephen's Church goes back to the founding of a monastery in Vlotho.
In 1258, Heinrich Count of Oldenburg transferred the moated castle of Schune to a Cistercian order for the establishment of a monastery. The order sent nuns from the Leeden convent to Vlotho. The Segental convent was finally founded on March 16, 1258. However, as the building was located in the floodplain of the Weser, a new monastery complex was built on today's church square in 1288.

The monastery church was not completed until January 25, 1325 and consecrated to Saint George by Bishop Ludwig von Minden. However, this naming has been forgotten in the course of history. During the Minden feud of 1368, the town and the monastery were almost completely destroyed, but later rebuilt.

Today, the former monastery church has served as a place of worship for the Lutheran community of Vlotho since the Reformation as St. Stephen's Church. The southern nave was added in 1659/60.
