Herbram Wald Oil Terminal

  • Archaeological site
Amid the trees and overgrown ruins in Herbram-Wald, visitors can discover a piece of history that is barely recognizable at first glance today. Remnants of concrete, earthen embankments, a former railroad right-of-way, and other traces in the area tell the story of a fuel depot that operated here during the Nazi era.

A walking tour takes visitors past several themed stations throughout the former camp. Among the sights are the remains of the railroad tracks, a locomotive shed, a pump station, a fuel bunker, a fire pond, and a loading ramp. Information panels and QR codes provide insights into the function of the individual areas and the history of the site.

The fuel depot belonged to the “Wissenschaftliche Forschungsgesellschaft mbH” (WiFo), a state-run front organization established to prepare for war. Today, the architectural traces still visible on the site also serve as a reminder of the facility’s destruction by bombing raids and help visitors understand the history of the location.
