Oasis of peace in the city
Herford's main cemetery "Ewiger Frieden" is located between Mindener Straße and Eimterstraße. The largest cemetery in Herford, covering over 28 hectares, was inaugurated on June 29, 1924. As a typical landscape cemetery, its layout was modeled on the large cemetery in Bielefeld-Senne. The cemetery chapel was built in 1955.

As a green oasis in the densely built-up city, cemeteries are often "hot spots" of biodiversity, and "Eternal Peace" is no exception. Many bird species can be found in the diverse tree population, such as both species of goldcrest, stock dove, green woodpecker and occasionally even the spruce crossbill.

The tawny owl calls out its eerie "Come along - Come along!" and is therefore superstitiously regarded as a messenger of death.
