The former Franciscan monastery, which was built on the site of the earliest count's castle in the bend of the River Ems that can be traced back to Rietberg, shaped the political, cultural and religious life of the Rietberg region for more than three centuries.
Until 1979, the church (consecrated in 1629) and monastery building (built in 1726) were used by the Franciscans. The church interior was redesigned during the most recent restoration (2007) according to historical findings. Twelve members of the count's houses of Ostfriesland, Rietberg and Kaunitz were buried in the crypt, which has also been redesigned.
