Historic site
Schinderhannes in the Wiehengebirge
The former covering plant from 1914 was known as "Haus Birkenhof" and is now a metal processing company. The term "covering" refers to the skinning of cattle and game. It was difficult for the knacker to gain social recognition, which was certainly due to the unpleasant smell caused by the processing of carcasses. On the other hand, the frequent personal union of the knacker with the office of executioner may also have been a reason. The fact that they were on the fringes of society, both geographically and socially, brought some butchers into disrepute. Famous robbers such as the "Schinderhannes" (Schinder is another name for knacker) began their careers as knacker.

The copper beech tree in front of the former knacker's yard is over 120 years old, 26 m high and has a circumference of 3.60 m. It was placed under protection as a natural monument in 1994. This gives the owner the opportunity to have maintenance or even rescue measures carried out with public support.
