Eggeturm auf dem preußischen Velmerstot

Tip
Vantage point/Observation tower
With its twin peaks, the Velmerstot is one of the largest elevations in the Teutoburg Forest. The Lippe Velmerstot is 441 m high and the Prussian Velmerstot is 468 m high.
From 1964 to 1994, the Prussian Velmerstot was home to a Dutch NATO base with a radar station and missile base. After the dissolution of the military facility, nature felt at home again. In 2003, the Hochstift forestry office erected the imposing Eggeturm tower, 17 m high, with a viewing platform at a height of 9.15 m, on the former NATO station. In good visibility, visitors can enjoy the 360° view from the Hermannsdenkmal over the Köterberg to the Solling or Sauerland . The rare birds hazel grouse, red kite, eagle owl, black, middle-spotted and gray woodpecker as well as the black stork have settled in the adjacent nature reserve.
