In 1847, Bielefeld was connected to the "Cöln-Mindener-Eisenbahn", which supported the incipient industrialization in the city. The station at the time, a simple neoclassical building, was rebuilt twice and finally replaced by the current station building from 1907/10.
The building is a late Art Nouveau design. The mighty limestone ashlars make it clear that railroad stations were always also representative buildings.
As freight and passenger traffic steadily increased in the course of industrialization, freight handling was relocated. The station building was extended several times and its interior was adapted to suit current needs and tastes. Today, the station district is a popular destination for partygoers.
