After the Elector Friedrich Wilhelm granted the Exterans permission to build their own church in 1666, they built it in just three months. The Renaissance-style tower followed 10 years later. The church tower remained standing when the dilapidated nave was demolished and rebuilt in 1951.
Since 1959, the simple church has been open to travelers on the nearby A 2 freeway and offers space and silence for contemplative breaks. Above the entrance, a coat of arms stone with the monogram F W C still commemorates the Elector and the year the church was founded.
