The size of the classrooms followed the regulations of the regional school authority (consistory) in Detmold exactly. According to these regulations, the classrooms were to provide space for 80 children, exactly 0.60 square meters per child. In 1896, the middle school was attended by 654 children who were taught by six teachers. Due to the increasing number of pupils, the school building had to be extended in 1898. Four more classrooms were built. A further extension followed in 1909. In 1914, for example, a total of 805 pupils attended the school, which was taught by eight state teachers and four community teachers.
In the mid-1960s, the middle school underwent another thorough renovation and took on its current form. The old gymnasium, toilet block and janitor's apartment disappeared in the process. The current gymnasium has been in use since 1963.
