In the sparsely wooded district of Herford, it is a coincidence that there is a lot of forest in the far north-west - here the district boundary runs westwards for a good distance from the Dono mountains along the crest of the Wiehengebirge.

From the southern slope of the ridge, it has recently become possible to enjoy more expansive views of the landscape, as many spruce trees have died. New forest is being created and its development is influenced by climate change. Quarries are evidence of intensive use in earlier times.
