Cycle route WÜ 8 takes you 15.1 km through the forest to the east of the Bad Wünnenberg district of Bleiwäsche. It takes you past the Aabach dam and the "Schweinskopf", the highest point in the Paderborn region at 480 m. Idyllic places such as the Glashütte forester's lodge and the Schützenwiese meadow add a special touch to this beautiful ride through the countryside.

The cycle paths around Bad Wünnenberg marked with the red and white NRW cycle signs (labeled WÜ =Bad Wünnenberg 1 to 8) vary in length from 9 km to 25.1 km. They lead partly through meadows and fields but also through forests around Bad Wünnenberg. Most of them are asphalted and therefore easy to cycle on.

The WÜ 8 cycle route has a length of 15.1 km. It starts and ends at the Schützenhalle in Bleiwäsche. The route runs mainly through forest, with a section through Bleiwäsche and a section along the Aabach dam. The changing landscapes and natural areas make the route varied and interesting. Between Bleiwäsche and the Aabach dam, you will pass a cross erected in memory of a letter carrier who froze to death there in the century before last. Once you reach the Aabach dam, you can enjoy the view over the water. The Glashütte forester's lodge and the Schützenwiese meadow to the south-east of the dam are idyllic places to enjoy the tranquillity of the forest. From the Schützenwiese, the trail climbs steadily uphill to the Schweinskopf. Fitness is required here. At 480 m above sea level, the Schweinskopf is the highest elevation in the Paderborn region. From there, you return to the starting point through Bleiwäsche.

Bleiwäsche is the southernmost district of the town of Bad Wünnenberg. The name of the village of Bleiwäsche refers to its foundation as a mining village. Promising lead and silver ores were discovered and mined at the beginning of the 16th century. For several centuries, hard mining was an important source of income for the inhabitants, whose main concern, in addition to earning a living, was the supply of water. Due to the high location of the village, the springs were not productive enough. In dry times up until the 1970s, water was only available for the houses on the higher ground from 6.00 am to 12.00 noon. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. there was water for the lower-lying houses. A municipal servant with a bell went through the village and rang the bell to signal that the water had been turned off.

The sculpture of a "lead washer" on the road through Bleiwäsche symbolizes the history of mining.

Directions

The tour is 15.1 km long and starts and ends at the Schützenhalle in Bleiwäsche. Take Bruchstraße north out of the village. Shortly before the district road, turn right onto the wellness cycle route. The path becomes a narrow path for a short distance before it becomes paved again at the rest area where there is a wooden cross. The path leads down to the Aabachtalsperre dam. Once you reach the Aabachtalsperre circular path, turn right and follow the circular path. You leave it at the 4th fork to the right, when you reach the Glashütte forester's lodge. Pass the forester's lodge and turn right at the next junction. At the next fork, turn right again, then go straight over the next crossroads and take the next right to Schützenwiese. Ride past the rest house and follow the road up to the Schweinskopf. Then it goes into Bleiwäsche. Bleiwäsche is the southernmost district of the town of Bad Wünnenberg and was founded at the beginning of the 16th century as a mining village. To the south-west of Bleiwäsche is the Düstertal quarry, which is still being worked. It offers a good insight into the highly interesting geology of the northern Sauerland. Once you arrive in Bleiwäsche, turn right into Potthofsweg to return to the Schützenhalle.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

A detour to the Düstertal quarry is worthwhile. You can't go straight in, but three newly created viewing points offer a good overview of the quarry. From there you can watch the daily quarrying work. They also offer a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape.

Information boards provide information about the mining history of Bleiwäsch and the geological features.

Guided excursions to the quarry are offered by the VHS during the summer months. You can register with the town of Bad Wünnenberg Tel: 02953 709-0

Tours of the quarry are only possible during operating hours from Mon.-Fri. Appointments must be arranged with the plant management
