Valentin and Proteus are childhood friends. Valentin wants to go out into the world to find happiness at the court of the Duke of Milan. Proteus is in love with Juliet and does not want to leave her under any circumstances, but is forced by his mother to follow Valentin to the Duke's court. Once in Milan, they both fall in love with Silvia, the duke's beautiful daughter, but her father wants her to marry the rich nobleman Thurio. With the help of a clever intrigue, Proteus manages to get his best friend banished from Milan. But Proteus' plan does not work: Not only does Silvia spurn his vows of love and eventually flees the court in search of Valentin. His old love also catches up with him. Julia, who was left behind at home, has set off for Milan disguised as a man in order to see Proteus again. What follows are deceptions and all kinds of turbulent entanglements.
