The basis of the scenic cantata Carmina Burana were 24 poems from the medieval poetry collection of the same name. The authors are poets and fugitive monks, students and pupils who traveled the world and wrote down their thoughts in Latin, Old German and Old French. The song and orchestral numbers, which stand in contrast to each other, show different views of the world: Some celebrate the joys of life, happiness, unbridled gaiety, the beauty of springtime nature and the passion of love, while others depict the difficult lives of monks and traveling students, an ironic attitude towards one's own life and hope for the favors of fate. The most important philosophical core of the cantata is the idea that man, with all his little joys and sorrows, is just a toy in the hands of capricious fate, whose symbol is the ever-turning wheel of fortune. All artistic disciplines merge together: a large orchestra plays for the dancers as well as for the adult and children's choir. Video installations are played in the background.
