The gateway to the Senne at the springs of the Ems
The water gushes fresh and clear from the springs of the Ems in Hövelhof. Hövelhof itself is just as refreshing. Visitors are offered a lot here in many respects. The Moosheide with its characteristic sand dunes is a highlight for every hiker and nature lover. Various themed hiking trails invite you to explore the different facets of the still young municipality. The Historical Hiking Trail and the Heideland Circular Hiking Trail are two certified hiking trails that couldn't be more different. Whether it's the Historical Hiking Trail, which is suitable for baby carriages, or the natural Heideland Circular Hiking Trail, you don't have to compromise on quality on your exploration tour.
Wonderful cycling
There is a very special highlight for all cycling visitors: Hövelhof is the starting point of the popular Ems Cycle Path, which covers a total length of 385 km and leads to Emden on the North Sea. The Ems Information Center in the immediate vicinity of the Ems springs offers a wide range of discovery opportunities and information on the Ems and the Ems Cycle Path. This is the right place for anyone who would like to see the source of the Ems for themselves. Before starting your cycle tour, take a quick selfie at the official starting point and off you go. Many other local cycle routes also pass through Hövelhof, e.g. the Paderborner Land Route or the Senne Cycle Route. Visitors on the R1 European Cycle Route can get a foretaste of the venerable Hermann monument in Detmold in Hövelhof. If you want to start with shorter routes, you can choose between eight circular tours with a length of nine to 60 kilometers according to your own taste.
Origin and tradition
Hövelhof is still a young municipality. The municipality only became independent in 1807 by a decree signed by the then King of Westphalia, Jérome Bonaparte. The municipality owes its name to the "Hövelhof", which is considered to be Hövelhof's original farm. In 1661, the hunting lodge of the Paderborn prince-bishops was built on the site of the farm. At the time, it was considered to be the vacation home of the prince-bishops, who today could probably be described as the first Hövelhof tourists. Today, the hunting lodge is a Hövelhof landmark.
Traditions are very important to us. At the Senne Heritage Center, you can experience how the Senne residents lived in our region around 1900. In the associated "House of Historical Crafts", you can also try out old crafts for yourself. The village school museum in Riege invites you to a historical school lesson, a little tip: chatting in class is not allowed here.
Socializing
A lot of experiences make you hungry. The Hövelhof gastronomy world has a lot to offer:
From German cuisine to modern gastro concepts to foreign cuisine, you are cordially invited to be our guests.
