Teppich-Museum Tönsmann | LandArt-Station 5.04

Museum/Exhibition

In the Tönsmann Carpet Museum, you can learn all about the weaving families, antique carpets and carpet production.

History of the craft

The museum takes you into the carpet world of North Africa, Tibet and Nepal. Exhibits of all kinds tell stories about the ancient craft of carpet weaving and the life of the nomadic peoples. On our guided tours, you will learn lots of interesting facts about antique carpets, the everyday lives and traditions of the weavers' families and many an anecdote. How much effort goes into a real carpet? We demonstrate the work steps using original weaving frames and tools. With insights into carpet restoration and cleaning, we build a bridge from the past to the present. Lectures shed light on exciting aspects: Carpet production in the past and today, how do I assess the quality of a carpet, child labor as well as art, culture and handicrafts in Morocco.
