Barntrup Castle, also known as "Kerssenbrock Castle", was built in the middle of the 16th century by Anna von Canstein. She was married to the mercenary leader Franz von Kerssenbrock, who died shortly after the wedding. Construction work began in 1577 and the archway, which has been preserved to this day, was completed in the same year. The manor house was built between 1584 and 1588 by master builder Eberhard Wilkening as a small castle with two storeys and three corner towers. It was the first castle in the Weser region to be decorated with boss stones. This architectural style later developed into a characteristic of the Weser Renaissance. At the end of the 19th century, the interior of the castle was remodeled and the sandstone slabs of the roof were replaced with red tiles. The castle became somewhat famous thanks to the 1952 film "Vacation from Me".
The property is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
