A total of 106 ha of land with and around the Kilverbach has been a nature reserve since 1990. The widely branching stream system is typical of the Ravensberg hilly landscape and over long stretches takes the form of a box valley, locally known as Siek.
The small-scale and ever-changing landscape structures provide habitats for a large number of protected and endangered animal and plant species, such as the stone loach (bottom left), brown trout and cuckoo pink.
The kingfisher has been breeding on the Kilverbach for many years. As a flying gem, it hunts small fish in the clear water. At night, the water bat is on the prowl. The Kilverbach valley is an important distribution area for many bat species.
