The tower is part of the medieval fortifications of Brakel, the so-called Landwehr.
The name comes from the nearby farmstead of Modexen (Modekessen), which fell into ruin in the middle of the 14th century. The tower is part of the medieval fortifications of Brakel, the so-called Landwehr, which were located at some distance from the actual town fortifications (rampart, moat and town wall). These outpost towers with 2-3 storeys were manned by guards. As soon as the outposts spotted an enemy, they closed the heavy battering rams, retreated into the interior of the tower and signalled to the town's towers by fire at night and by flags during the day that danger was imminent.

The Modex Tower was not part of the actual land defence, but was located on a ridge closer to the town and was probably erected as a sentry post to transmit signals in the event of an attack. The Modex Tower was first mentioned in 1383 in a document from the town of Brakel in connection with the sale of a plot of land.
