The former Franciscan monastery in Wiedenbrück was founded in 1644 at the instigation of Osnabrück Bishop Franz Wilhelm von Wartenberg. The baroque monastery building was erected between 1667 and 1716. It is located in the center of Wiedenbrück - just a 5-minute walk from the market square.
The Franciscan order left the monastery in 2020. A civic, non-profit cooperative has taken over the entire monastery complex. Today, the monastery is an independent place of culture and education, of encounters and engagement.
The Wiedenbrück monastery is an attractive place for travelers. Guided tours and meals for groups can be arranged on request.
The monastery garden is an open, green space in the middle of the city. It is perfect for a break on your travels at any time of year. The garden is open weekdays from 9 am - 5 pm, Saturdays from 10 am - 1 pm and on summer Sundays from 1 pm - 5 pm. Other times on request!
Take a guided tour to discover more about the monastery and Franciscan life: the refectory is the former dining room of the Franciscans. The historic library contains books that were once used for information and the preparation of sermons. The oldest copies date back to the 17th century.
Groups of 10 to 29 people can stay overnight in shared rooms in the monastery's guest house. Self-catering guests will find a fully equipped kitchen and a large dining room. Meals can also be booked.
The monastery store "alte küche" is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. In the monastery store you will find a small, fine selection of very special things from the monastery garden, the kitchen and the handicraft team.
The monastery's event program offers music, literature, talks, exhibitions and much more. Tickets are available online or at the monastery (Monday to Friday 9 am - 1 pm and 2 pm - 5 pm).
