Floodplains are among the most species-rich habitats in Europe. High and low water levels alternate constantly here, creating a mosaic of wet meadows, alluvial forests and natural floodplains. Typical plants such as silver willows can withstand long periods of flooding, while numerous bird species and amphibians use these areas as breeding grounds and retreats. Along the way, you will encounter wooded sections, open fields and small farms.
