The current church was built towards the end of the 17th century by the Tyrolean master builder Marcus Weyrather. One of his granddaughters - Maria Wilhelmine Weyrather, born in 1742 - was the great-great-grandmother of the heath poet Hermann Löns.
The then sovereigns Ferdinand II von Fürstenberg (reign: 1661-1683) and Hermann Werner, Baron von Wolff-Metternich zu Gracht (1683-1714) contributed considerable funds to the construction of the church.
From the outside, the church building gives an almost Romanesque impression, which is mainly due to the massive square west tower with its elongated arched windows and curved spire. The interior of the church itself is characterized by a single nave, structured by ribbed vaults with belt arches, pilasters (wall pillars) with rather simply profiled capitals, the chancel closed on three sides and the western tower hall.
The altarpiece (motif: The Holy Family) was painted in 1681 by the Brakel artist and Paderborn church painter Johann Georg Rudolpghi. The painting is clearly emphasized, as it is flanked on each side by two staggered columns with rich capitals and a sculpture, which literally frame it and create a harmonious overall work.
The two side altars are also constructed in a similar way to the main altar. However, the central image is only framed by one column, but also by two statues.
The magnificent carved oak cheeks on the pews date back to the church built in 1682-1698. Only the backrests of the pews were replaced in the 1970s. Apart from the windows, the single-nave hall church has hardly changed structurally since the 17th century.
A detailed description of the church can be found in the brochure "Stadt Beverungen - Rundgang durch die Weserstadt und ihre wechselvolle Geschichte", which is available free of charge from the Tourist Information Beverungen.Good to know
