As the last male scion of the noblemen of Büren, Moritz von Büren decreed in his will in 1640 that a church and a college be built by the Jesuit order. The church was built from 1754 to 1773 in the late Baroque style according to plans by Franz Heinrich Roth.
The ceiling windows inside the church depict important moments in the life of the church's patron saint. They were painted in warm pastel shades and are in perspective. This creates the impression that the church is open at the top, giving visitors a view of the "Westphalian sky". Together with the former Jesuit College, now the Mauritiusgymnasium, it forms an ensemble that has shaped the view of the city for over 250 years and attracts numerous guests from all over Germany.
