Herrenhaus Südhemmern

Fortress/Castle

The Südhemmern manor house from 1886 is an elegant monument to Prussian history and architecture.

A building with Prussian inspiration

Ludwig Meyer, the creator of the Südhemmern manor house, was not only a respected colon (farmer and landowner), but also politically active. As a member of the fourth estate in the Prussian parliament (Reichstag), he spent a lot of time in Berlin and Potsdam. These stays influenced him and shaped his ideas of style and architecture. A comparison of the decorations on the manor house with the elements of the Sanssouci palace complex clearly shows the inspiration of the Prussian residences. The manor house thus became a testimony to its time and reflects the particular taste of its owner.

Craft details and initials on the front door

The imposing front door of the manor house deserves special attention. This is fitted with wrought iron grilles, which represent an artful combination of aesthetics and tradition. On the left-hand side of the door is an oval bearing the initials "LM" for Ludwig Meyer, while the right-hand side shows the year "1886" - the year the building was completed. These details give the building a personal touch and are a reminder of the family that has always owned the manor house.

The anecdote of the Kaiser's visit

An anecdote that was passed down in the family tells of Ludwig's wish to receive Kaiser Wilhelm II in Südhemmern. On the occasion of an imperial visit to the nearby town of Minden, Meyer hoped that the monarch would spend the night in his newly built manor house. However, the emperor ultimately opted for the comfortable imperial villa in Minden. Perhaps the tranquil town of Südhemmern was simply too remote for the emperor. This anecdote nevertheless remains an amusing piece of family history and gives the manor house a special historical note.

A manor house in family hands

Since it was built, the Südhemmern manor house has remained in the family and has been preserved to this day. Although the Meyer name has been lost due to marriages, the house name "Scheibe" or "Schewe" has been carried on. The historical charm and family traditions have remained alive and make the manor house a unique destination for culture and history lovers.

A special experience for visitors

For visitors who want to experience the history and architecture of the Südhemmern manor house, a tour of the estate is well worthwhile. In addition to the fascinating architectural details, the manor house also offers insights into the Prussian way of life in the 19th century.
