Herrenhaus Südhemmern im Mühlenkreis Minden-Lübbecke

Fortress/Castle

The Südhemmern manor house from 1886 is an elegant monument to Prussian history and architecture.

Colon Ludwig Meyer built this house in 1886. The large front door has wrought-iron grilles with an oval with the initials LM on the left and an oval with the year 1886 on the right.

Ludwig Meyer was a member of the fourth estate in the Prussian parliament (Reichstag) and his stays in Berlin and Potsdam probably inspired him to build the house. When comparing the decorations on the manor house in Südhemmern with the decorations of a house in the Sanssouci palace complex, this idea comes to mind.

The following anecdote has been handed down in the family about the building of the house:
When the emperor visited Minden, Ludwig Meyer thought about receiving and accommodating the emperor in Südhemmern. However, the emperor preferred to spend the night in the imperial villa in the center of Minden. Perhaps the cute village of Südhemmern was too far away for him after all.

The Südhemmern manor house has been in the family since it was built. The name Meyer has been lost through marriage, but the Meyer house name Scheibe / Schewe has been preserved to this day.Schloss Südhemmern: Tel. 05703 3908
