Like the Waldsee and the Talleseen lakes, the Habichtsee emerged from a quarry pond and later became a recreational area. The beginning of the characteristic Senneland landscape with its ice-age sand dunes and sparse pine forest can be seen more clearly on the eastern shore, the "sandy beach", than on the other two lakes.
Lake Habichtsee is a popular place to sunbathe in summer. Its water is cool groundwater that accumulates above the impermeable Emscher marl underground.
Sunbathing on the shores of the lake is permitted, but swimming in the lake is prohibited!
