The parish of Marienmünster-Nieheim has 2,000 members and is spread across 28 villages. Places of worship are the Kreuzkirche in Nieheim (consecrated in 1869), the chapel in Himmighausen-Bahnhof (since 1933) and the chapel at Marienmünster Abbey (since 1855).
The Nieheim Kreuzkirche is built in the neo-Gothic style, which is characterized by pointed arches, high windows and richly decorated facades. This architectural style was very popular in the 19th century, as it represents a return to the Gothic architecture of the Middle Ages.
Construction of the Kreuzkirche began in the early 1860s and was completed in 1865. The architect responsible for the design was inspired by traditional Gothic churches, which is reflected in the high ceilings and intricate details.
Another notable feature is the church's towers, which characterize the townscape of Nieheim. The use of local sandstone not only gives the building a special touch, but also ensures that it is well integrated into the surroundings.
The interior of the church is also remarkable, with ornate altars and an organ that is often used for musical events.
The foundation stone for the new church building was laid on May 15, 1868, and the consecration took place on September 29, 1869 after a construction period of just four months.
On December 17, 1869, barely a quarter of a year after the church was completed, a hurricane destroyed the steep spire of the west tower, which was exposed to the prevailing wind direction and, at 37.5 m high, exceeded the length of the church building of 25 m by 50 %. It fell onto the church roof and caused considerable damage to the church building. As the Diaspora congregation, according to its own statements "one of the poorest in the Province of Westphalia", did not have sufficient funds itself, the reconstruction could only be completed in 1876 after donations had been raised. The spire was shortened by a third in order to avoid further damage.
