The Great Peat Bog - a natural paradise with fascinating viewpoints

The Great Peat Bog in Hille and Lübbecke in the Minden-Lübbecke district is a unique natural area and the largest raised bog in North Rhine-Westphalia. With its impressive flora and fauna, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy the tranquillity of nature and discover rare animal and plant species. A visit to the viewing towers is particularly rewarding, offering a magnificent panoramic view of the vast moorland areas and their natural beauty.

The North Tower: a wide view over the moorland

The North Tower of the Great Peat Bog offers an ideal opportunity to experience the moor and its surroundings from a bird's eye view. Built in 2008, the wooden tower is located near the main entrance to the P3 parking lot of the nature reserve and can be reached via a short walk.

The north tower is a particular highlight in the early morning hours and in the evening at sunset. Then the warm light envelops the landscape in a magical, golden yellow glow. Birdwatchers are in for a treat here, as the moor is home to rare species such as cranes, short-eared owls and curlews.

The South Tower: a view of expanses of water and heathland

The South Tower, located around 2.5 kilometers south of the North Tower, offers another perspective of the Great Peat Bog. The path to the south tower leads through a varied landscape with birch groves and wetlands, which is easily accessible thanks to the construction of a wooden walkway. The south tower is slightly higher and provides an excellent view of the water areas and the plants typical of the moor, such as peat moss and cotton grass. In the summer months, flowering heather plants and yellow blooming marsh marigolds conjure up a colorful picture that can be viewed particularly beautifully from the observation tower.

The west tower adds the Great Peat Bog to its selection of viewpoints

Visitors are offered an all-round experience of this fascinating landscape. Whether from the north, south or west tower - each viewpoint offers a unique perspective and shows the versatility and beauty of this special natural paradise in Hille and Lübbecke.

A paradise for nature lovers and photographers

The Great Peat Bog is not only ideal for long walks and nature observations, but also for passionate photographers. The moor landscape changes with the seasons and offers a particularly atmospheric backdrop for nature shots in the early morning and evening thanks to the play of light and the low-lying wafts of mist. The two observation towers are therefore excellent places to capture the beauty of the Great Peat Bog in pictures and experience the tranquillity and vastness of this impressive natural backdrop.
