The Great Peat Bog is located between the Wiehengebirge mountains and the Mittelland Canal in the town of Lübbecke and the municipality of Hille. The parking lot at the Lübbecke-Gehlenbeck outdoor pool (on the L 771) offers ample parking and is also the starting point for the hike to the Great Peat Bog. After an initial orientation (information board), the path leads past old poplars and offers a view of natural meadows, ponds, pools and streams. At the next crossing, follow the red markings to the left and then, after a barrier, turn right past the moorland pond through a stand of willows and birch trees to reach the raised bog, which is unique in NRW and is home to typical moorland flora and fauna.

Visitors to the Great Peat Bog can also try out the new listening tour "Hike through the Great Peat Bog". The tour can first be downloaded with the free Lauschtour app on your smartphone and then you can hike through the nature reserve accompanied by the audio contributions.

After leaving the boardwalk behind us, we continue over springy peat sods and along an area of water to the first observation tower. A view from the tower over the moorland and the Wiehengebirge mountains is highly recommended. At the bottom, a boardwalk leads to the MOOR-ERLEBNIS-PFAD, which follows to the right. Here you can learn interesting facts about the plants and animals of the moorland and about bog bodies. In the warmer months, there is also the opportunity to experience the moor with all your senses in a moor mud pit.

After the refuge, the trail continues past meadows and a field hedge to the Flöthe stream. The red trail markings now point to the other side of the stream. Following a meadow path, we are now in the low moor area and after a short distance we reach another observation tower. Return from the tower and continue right along a paved path to the moor conservation farm. The sheep farm is run by the Minden-Lübbecke District Association of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU). On the grounds, NABU provides information about animals, plants and insects on educational boards.

The hiking trail now leads sharply to the right past young pollarded willows through meadows and then to the right to reach the large peat bog again after around 300 m. A boardwalk leads through a wetland area with willows and past gnarled pollard willows to an alluvial forest, where you have the last opportunity to take a look at the fascinating raised bog from a viewing tower. The rest of the route is surrounded by different types of shrubs and trees before the path turns left along the familiar route to the parking lot.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

Families can pick up a rally for the eavesdropping tour at the Moorhus or print it out at home and take it with them. The questions can be solved with the help of the audio contributions in order to obtain a solution word at the end. For the green hiking trail, the small listening tour rally offers exciting questions at six stations on the shortened listening tour (1.2 kilometers).
