Of bears and wild garlic in Bielefeld

With a very varied relief and partly uneven, roughly gravelled paths, this hiking route is ideal for experienced hikers. The Hermannsweg takes you along the ridge as well as along the northern slope of the Teutoburg Forest. At various stations along the trail, you will find excursion destinations worth seeing in the west of the East Westphalian metropolis of Bielefeld. The (admission-free) Olderdissen Zoo is a family-friendly insider tip with over 100 different animal species in spacious enclosures between ponds, meadows and forests.

Also attractively located on the Kahlenberg, the Botanical Garden invites visitors to stroll through flowerbeds, woodland and shrubberies as well as medicinal, spice and heather gardens. The Jostberg nature reserve (a former monastery complex), known for its beech forests rich in wild garlic, lines the hiking trail and then leads into the Hünenburg nature reserve with its typical Hainsimsen beech forests. Follow in the historical footsteps of the region at the Hünenburg, the ruins of a former Germanic hill fort, where today a television broadcasting tower and a viewing tower invite you to enjoy a wide view over the Senne and the Ravensberg hills. The Schwedenschanze and Kaiser-Friedrich-Hütte, a historic fortification whose remains can only be seen in outline, are located on the Petersberg.

It is also worth making a short stop at the impressive Meyer zu Hoberge half-timbered farm, which you will pass on your hike. The farmhouse museum promises a journey back in time to the 19th century, providing an insight into the Rvensberg way of life.
