Out and about in the Egge-Nord forest nature reserve in Altenbeken, the natural heritage forest in OWL.

The Durbeke-Steig is part of the Naturerbe Wanderwelt hiking trail near Altenbeken. This somewhat more challenging half-day hike takes you north-west of Altenbeken through the Durbeke beech forest, which is of European importance for species and biotope conservation. The course of the river of the same name only carries water after the snow has melted or after heavy rainfall. Hikes in spring with woodruff, larkspur and wild garlic in bloom or in golden autumn, when the magnificent forest resembles a sea of color, are a unique nature experience.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The approximately 2,600-hectare natural heritage forest is the largest area in Germany for the development of beech forest wilderness outside of a national park. The natural processes in the forest ecosystem are being given new space here. Together with the Senne and the Teutoburg Forest, the northern Eggegebirge is one of a total of 30 biodiversity hotspots in Germany selected by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). They are the treasure troves of nature in Germany.

Safety guidelines

Easy to moderately difficult hike. Not suitable for wheelchair users and baby carriages.
