Mystical landscapes, dramatic forces of nature, and a longing for a lost world: The German Museum of Fairy Tales and Weser Legends invites you to an international guided tour in English through the exhibition “Romantic Painting – 21 Great Masters Illuminated.” Cultural studies scholar Roxanne Elora Mettner guides visitors through the fascinating visual world of Romanticism, offering exciting international perspectives on art and contemporary history.

The exhibition features impressively staged works by major artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, William Turner, and Ivan Aivazovsky. Illuminated and, in some cases, enlarged, these famous paintings evoke a very special atmosphere—blending a longing for distant lands, an experience of nature, and the upheavals of the dawning modern era.
