The purpose of spa music is to relax the body and soul, promote health, is rather light-hearted and naturally appeals to a wide audience. One particularly successful advocate of this genre is the "Bad Salzuflen Orchestra".
The founder and head of the State Spa Orchestra is Hungarian-born György Kovacs, who studied clarinet himself and graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest.
The daily spa music can be heard in a line-up of up to seven musicians in the mornings and afternoons, except on Mondays. In the winter months, the orchestra plays with a smaller ensemble. The spa concerts play potpourris, for example from operettas and overtures, in the first half, and musical and pop melodies, swing, Dixieland and more in the second half. Special concerts have specific themes, such as a trip to Italy with music by Verdi and Rossini, or French composers such as Bizet and Massenet. The most popular concerts are the request concerts on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons.
