The sea knows no boundaries. But this freedom between waves and clouds is lost on land. In many cultures, surfing is a man's sport - women in the water is not appropriate. If women oppose it, they are ridiculed or rejected. But there are some who surf anyway
- and the number is growing...
In the film CHICKS ON BOARDS, Dörthe Eickelberg visits women who are making the big wave in their country: Around the globe - in India, South Africa, Palestine, Mexico and Hawaii - she meets female surfers who often pay a high price in their home countries to be able to pursue their passion. Side by side, they bravely face the sea and their fears and find the great freedom.
CHICKS ON BOARDS is a wild, colorful screen trip with a happy message: where there's a will, there's a wave. In emotionally charged, humorous scenes, Dörthe Eickelberg takes us on a journey with courageous female surfers caught between culture and nature, between social conventions and the laws of the sea. Surfing is more than a sport: it is a movement.
Dörthe Eickelberg studied at the Film Academy in Baden-Württemberg and is not only a presenter, improv actress, director and author - she also travels the world on a surfboard herself. She has been part of the team of presenters of the arte program X:enius since 2008. The award-winning sports documentary "Chicks On Boards" was followed by her book "Die nächste Welle ist für Dich" in 2021.
