Hiking
Explore the Rietberger Emsniederung, a fascinating landscape of wet meadows, dunes and historic fish ponds that provide a valuable habitat for countless bird species and insects. This free offer gives you the opportunity to explore the region in the company of DWV-certified hiking guides.

+++Start of registration: 17.03.2025+++

The Ems lowlands are a habitat characterized by water and meadows. Along the way, you will pass wetlands where the northern lapwing, curlew and black-tailed godwit breed. The Rietberg fish ponds, once created for carp farming, are now an important FFH conservation area for water birds. The trail leads over Tenge Estate with its old ramparts, a relic of the castle's history. The route continues along the Birkendamm to the Rietberger Emsniederung nature reserve. Here, pastures and shallow pools with changing water levels provide ideal breeding and resting places for wading birds, cranes and wild geese. The historic Antfängers Mühle mill is a reminder of the former dual use of the Ems as a watermill and duck trap.
