The Los Angeles art scene as a broad mindset takes up the entire Museum Marta during this period. The Californian attitude to life, but also the dystopias associated with it, create the matrix for an artist scene that continues to have an impact on current generations.

Selected works from the extensive Schürmann collection show exemplary positions from the 1990s and noughties and tie in with the so-called "Cool School Artists", who are the focus of the first floor. The centerpiece of the Lippold Gallery is the laboratory-like installation The Great See Battles of Wilhelm Schürmann (1994-95) by Jason Rhoades, which is based on photographs by the collector. Themes such as social ruptures, tensions and contradictory images, often in the context of US (consumer) culture, also define the conceptual framework for the other sculptures and paintings that are presented here together. The Museum Marta as a place of spatial experience as well as the Herford-Los Angeles axis are thus once again brought into the focus of the exhibition program.
