Around 1858, the entrepreneur Franz Lax had a water tower built behind his villa at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße 3.

Lax played a significant role in the development of the new town through its construction activities. The construction of the water tower made it possible to supply the district with running water. Together with the installation of a sewer system, Lax created a sanitary standard for this district that the rest of the city would not achieve until 50 years later. After the construction of a sewer system in the entire city area, the facilities in Laxburg were also used by the city. As the oldest preserved water tower in Westphalia, this building is an industrial monument of significance beyond Minden.
