The oldest artificial body of water in Lippe "Norderteich", a nature reserve since 1949, is an important breeding and resting place for rare bird species. The fishing lake was created in the early Middle Ages by monks from the Abdingerhof monastery in Paderborn and was used to provide food during Holy Week. The site later passed to the Lippe royal family and is now maintained by the Lippe state association. Every third year, the fish stock is fished out in mid-November.
