The Rietberg fish ponds - a nationally important core biotope for biotic communities of still waters.
The pond was created in the area of the former castle moat (where the "Rietberg Castle" stood). It was used for breeding carp and tench. Today, the area is protected with a large number of animal and plant species typical of the area. The "Rietberger Fischteiche" nature reserve is one of the most valuable biotopes in the whole of North Rhine-Westphalia, especially for waterfowl. The area consists of a complex of 26 ponds, some smaller, some larger, which surround the Rietberg estate. It is privately owned and not open to the public. A viewing platform on the edge of the nature reserve provides an insight.
