Licht-Blick Church | Church at the Castle

In the shadow of Wewelsburg Castle stands a small church with a turbulent history that today offers a very special place of peace and reflection. Dedicated to St. Jodokus, the church was built in the 14th century in the late Gothic style and originally served as the castle chapel of the prince-bishop’s castle. After several renovations, the small church became central to the SS’s plans for Wewelsburg during the Nazi regime. It was to make way for the planned “Center of the World”—a project that was never carried out following the end of World War II.

Today, the church—now a multimedia “Light and Reflection Church”—is a place of encounter, tranquility, and inspiration. A modern sound and light installation can be controlled via touchscreen and offers around 50 spiritual reflections, each lasting about five minutes. Visitors can choose from various themes and bring their personal thoughts, questions, or experiences into the “light.”

The program is updated regularly and includes topics such as “Wewelsburg, a Place That Speaks,” “Me and My Life,” and “God, Greater Than My Heart.” Seasonal “Licht-Blick” experiences round out the offering. Introductory information is also available in ten languages.

With each selected “Licht-Blick,” the church interior is transformed by changing colors, sounds, and words. Light, music, and text are precisely coordinated, creating a space for pause and reflection for a few minutes.
