The Kreuzkapelle stands on Ostenländer Straße, and its history dates back a long time. The current building was constructed in the 18th century in the classical style with an open vestibule. A chapel on this site was already mentioned as early as the Middle Ages.
The Kreuzkapelle holds special significance for Delbrück’s Kreuztracht. On Good Friday, the time-honored procession winds its way from the historic church square through the town to this very spot. Thousands of worshippers line the route as an actor portraying Jesus carries the cross. After prayers at the seven stations of the cross, the procession concludes at the chapel with a sermon.
There are also historical details to discover inside. The altarpiece depicts the crucifixion of Jesus, and beneath the altar is a representation of Jesus’ tomb. A bronze Stations of the Cross and statues of St. Catherine, the Mother of God, and St. Stephen complete the interior. Outside stands a statue of St. John of Nepomuk.
Today, the Cross Chapel is an important site in Delbrück’s tradition of the Cross and, at the same time, a testament to the town’s religious history. The chapel grounds are open to the public.
